Many Christchurch residents say they have been left rattled, after five fresh aftershocks were recorded in the city overnight. A recent period of relatively little quake activity had given some a false sense of security and the jolts came as a shock. Police Inspector Paul Fremaux said last night the earthquakes sparked a number of calls from concerned members of the public and the quakes also shook the Christchurch Central police station.
There was a burst of seismic activity between 7.23pm to 8.01pm, when four quakes ranging in magnitude between 3.2 and 4.1 on the Richter scale hit. They were all centred around 5km from Christchurch. Another quake measuring 3.8 hit at 1:57am this morning, about 10km southeast of Christchurch. Earlier yesterday a magnitude four quake hit at 4.45pm. It was located 10 kilometres south west of Darfield at a depth of five kilometres.
