The Government has announced it will look into developing a new port, south of Blenheim, which could replace the Picton ferry terminal. The study will look into the possibility of creating a $200 million port in Clifford Bay. The new terminal could reduce travel time between islands by up to an hour and a half for both rail and passenger services. But Marlborough councillor David Otie told ONE News the loss of business to Picton has some in the town concerned. "Picton is a town that relies heavily on the 1.2 or 1.3 millions who come through (each year) so there will be quite an impact on a lot of businesses," he said. Otie said the threat of a new port had hung over the town for some years, and many residents had thought the issue had gone away. "I will be very surprised if the town wasn't anxious about this, (and) a little bit angry about it. We thought it had been buried some time ago," he told ONE News.
