Flights between Christchurch, Mount Cook and Queenstown will operate for a six-week trial period from December 23 next year to meet the high-season demand from foreign tourists, particularly from Japan. Flights would operate three times a week using a 68-seat ATR turboprop. Air New Zealand last flew scheduled service into the airport at the head of Lake Pukaki nearly 10 years ago. The airline also planned to replace six ATR services a week from Rotorua to Christchurch and on to Queenstown with a Boeing 737 jet between November next year to March 2013.

The partial float of online auction company Trade Me Group has been priced at $2.70 a share, and the online auction site will take on $166 million of new debt. That's at the top end of an indicative range of $2.30 to $2.70 a share in a bookbuild to sell shares to institutions and set broker allocations. Owner Fairfax Media will walk away with $529.5 million from the sale of 134.6 million shares, or 34 per cent of Trade Me Group, because of the new Trade Me debt.

Solid Energy has announced plans for a new underground and open-cast coal mine employing up to 150 people, inland from Spring Creek Mine on the West Coast. The news was well-received in Greymouth this morning, with hopes it will bring the town a much-needed boost after the Pike River Mine disaster. Solid Energy said the proposed new Liverpool Mine, uphill from the old mining township of Rewanui, would complement, not replace, the Spring Creek underground mine at Dunollie. Potentially, it would provide jobs for 15-20 years. If exploration goes well the new mine could be producing coal as early as 2014 or 2015, from a series of small open-cast and underground mines.

LATEST: Earthquake-ravaged Christchurch will get a 17,000-seat temporary stadium, Prime Minister John Key has announced. The New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) also confirmed today that the All Blacks would play Ireland in a test match at Rugby League Park in Addington in June. On the campaign trail in Christchurch today, Key said the new stadium was expected to be finished by March next year - in time for the 2012 Super Rugby season and the Crusaders' first home game. "The new temporary stadium will allow Cantabrians to experience the excitement of Crusaders and Canterbury ITM Cup home games again as well as Phoenix football matches, rugby league games, other major sporting events, concerts and festival events," Key said.

Prime Minister John Key says the Government is keen to look at how it can combat high KiwiSaver fees that eat up almost half of the earnings in the six default KiwiSaver providers. His comments follow the Green Party proposal at the weekend for a seventh default provider managed by the Guardians of the New Zealand Superannuation (Cullen) Fund to slash fees and costs. Last month the Financial Markets Authority's annual report showed 42 per cent, or $43 million, was charged in fees on fund earnings of $104 million for the six default providers. The ratio was 28 per cent for non-default providers, which charged $121 million in fees on fund earnings of $432 million. Mr Key said KiwiSaver fees had been high at default providers, given the level of management required, but the managers effectively managed the money on the savers' behalf.

Maori Party leader Pita Sharples looks set to hold his seat in the Tamaki Makaurau electorate, according to a TVNZ poll out this afternoon. The Te Karere Digipoll found 58 percent of respondents said they would vote for Pita Sharples in the electorate and pointed to him as their favoured MP. Sharples' main opposition, Labour MP Shane Jones, is on a distant 23 percent, indicating Sharples is likely to take out the Tamaki Makaurau electorate with less than three weeks until the election.

The wage gap between New Zealand and Australia is now said to be around 40%. The figure was given on TV ONE's Close Up tonight by Don Brash who chaired a working group tasked with investigating how New Zealand could close the gap with Australia. "In 2008 we estimated the gap was 35% currently it's nearer 40%," he said. In the past three years around 100,000 Kiwis have moved to Australia. In a text poll run on Close Up tonight, 73% of respondents said they had seriously considered joining them. In the past year 49,000 Kiwis have moved to Australia, joining more than half a million New Zealand citizens who live and work there.

A Japanese mining expert quit working at Pike River mine just a month before the November 19 disaster because he feared the mine would explode, the Pike River Royal Commission will hear. The written evidence of Masaoki Nishioka, obtained by Radio New Zealand ahead of the hearings next week, will be heard as the inquiry investigates what led to the West Coast mine explosions last year. Twenty nine men died as a result of the explosions, their bodies remain in the mine. Nishioka, a mining contractor, who had 40 years of experience in high pressure water mining, had only worked at the mine for three months before he left because he was too afraid to go underground. His evidence shows the reasons for his concern included serious design flaws with the water system, the methane gas draining system and the coal faces. Questions will be raised, however, around why he did not voice these issues ahead of leaving the mine last year.

Anyone looking to buy property, particularly in Auckland, will be well aware of the high number of leaky homes on the market. Nationally there are an estimated 42,000 leaky homes - what real estate agents call houses with weathertightness issues - and only about 3500 had been repaired at the last count in 2010. That's despite the fact more than 70 per cent of our household wealth is tied up in New Zealand's 1.7 million homes. So leaks are something you need to beware of when out hunting for a house. Buyers should not assume that only monolithic clad homes, which were popular during the construction period danger zone of the 1990s to 2000s and are known to have a high percentage of weathertightness failings, are leaky.

A fairly strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 has hit off the shores of Japan's southern Okinawa Island. Officials said the quake, which struck at 11.59am (3.59pm NZ time) today about 220 kilometres away from the island, was not expected to cause a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Northeastern Japan was devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11 that left nearly 20,000 people dead or missing. Japan, which lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, is one of the world's most seismically active countries.

The Honda Torneo is the most stolen car in New Zealand, according to claims placed with AA Insurance. The Nissan Elgrand van came in second, followed by three Subarus - the Impreza, Forester and Legacy - in third, fourth and fifth. The Nissan Silvia, which has topped the list for the past three years has been knocked out of the top 10 altogether. The information is based on AA Insurance's highest theft claims incidence over the last four years for cars covered under comprehensive insurance.
