Christchurch has been shaken by a magnitude five earthquake, the largest of several tremors recorded overnight. The magnitude 5 aftershock struck at 2.47am, centred 10 kilometres east of Christchurch at a depth of 9 kilometres. GNS Science says the quake was felt in Canterbury. Police say they have had no reports of further damage in the city or injuries.

As cargo from the wrecked Rena continues to wash up on the shoreline, the government faces calls for a royal commission of inquiry into the maritime disaster. The container ship – which ran aground on the Astrolabe Reef off Mt Maunganui in early October – broke up seven days ago after being battered by rough seas. About 881 containers remained on board the ship when it split up and about 150 are thought to have spilled overboard in the subsequent hours. Since then, freight such as timber and milk powder has washed ashore. Green Party oceans spokesman Gareth Hughes has called for an independent commission to investigate the disaster and Maritime New Zealand's overall management of New Zealand's commercial waterways. "The government still hasn't committed to an independent inquiry. But we need one," Hughes told the Sunday Star-Times. An internal Maritime New Zealand inquiry would not go far enough and would not criticise the agency's performance. "Neither Maritime New Zealand nor the salvors will come out and say they should have done a better job. Ministers also won't question their response. "That is why you need an independent inquiry."

An elderly couple say they have been forced to live in a motorhome after their insurance company refused to pay for their house to be made habitable after a police raid. Sid Hutton says damage of more than $60,000 was done to their suburban Hamilton home when officers fired teargas and smashed their way into the three-bedroom property in search of son Mark, who has been charged with the commission of a crime with a firearm and is remanded in custody. Hutton said he understood the actions of the police, who entered the family home without permission. But he said he and his wife Gael had had their lives turned upside down by Australian-based insurer Capricorn Mutual, which has refused to meet their compensation requests because the damage was the result of criminal activity.

The practice - which involves the partial or complete removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons - is banned in New Zealand. Any person who carries out the procedure, or orders it to be done to a dependant, may be imprisoned for up to seven years. The Ministry of Health last year funded a series of workshops on the practice, with those present being told there was no evidence that the controversial female circumcision operations occurred in New Zealand. It is a stance that is also shared by the NZ Female Genital Mutilation Education Programme - a community-based initiative partly set up in response to the rising number of women settling in New Zealand from countries that practise the procedure. But a newly released United Nations report on a hoped-for global end to female genital mutilation states: "The practice is prevalent in 28 countries in Africa and in some countries in Asia and the Middle East. "In addition, a growing number of women and girls among immigrant communities have been subjected to or are at risk of female genital mutilation in Australia and New Zealand."

LATEST: Wellington police are treating the discovery of a body in a drain in a car park beside Te Papa as suspicious. The body was found by members of the public about midday today at Chaffers Marina. Detective Inspector Paul Basham said police were in the initial stages of scene examination. "We're looking to recover the body, which appears to be lodged inside a stormwater culvert." It was too early to speculate on the identity of the person or circumstances surrounding the death, however police were treating the incident as suspicious.

Hell Pizza is firing up in Korea, 15 years after it first started selling pizzas in Wellington's Kelburn squash club. The irreverent takeaway joints are now spread around the world, including franchises in Canada, Britain and India. Director Stu McMullin says its master franchisor in Korea – backed by entrepreneur Yong-Seok Kang, who previously headed up a pharmaceutical company specialising in horse-cloning – will open its third Hell store in the South Korean capital Seoul next month. It also has plans for a further seven "pilot" stores there. New Zealand has 65 Hell outlets, he says, but such is the scale of Korea that Seoul, with a population of about 20 million, could end up with 100. The two Korean stores, which opened in August and November, "are doing OK", and turning over between $12,000 and $15,000 a week, McMullin says. Established in 1996, was sold to Burger King owner Tasman Pacific Foods in 2006,then bought back in 2009 by current directors Stu McMullin, Callum Davies and Warren Powell. Now in Korea, India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Britain 65 shops in New Zealand. Takes 50,000 to 60,000 orders – roughly equivalent to 120,000 pizzas – a month in New Zealand 40 to 50 per cent of its New Zealand business is delivery orders Busiest store is Hell Pizza on Cuba St.

In a Sunday Star-Times readers' poll, almost half of respondents said they became so irked with technology they resorted to yelling at their computers or phones. Almost half of those surveyed (47 per cent) were driven to yell occasionally and 10 per cent frequently found themselves driven to shout. Half of those who resort to yelling at technology do so in the privacy of their home but 40 per cent of the furious will vent their frustration anywhere. Many readers voiced their frustration at the complexity of technology, and their comments reflected a yearning for simplicity. "A lot of the 'thrills' of technology seem pointless, just time-wasting rather than enhancing efficiency," said one reader who thought mobile phones were the "new cigarette, something to do with your hands to fill in time or look cool".

A young Auckland family are the latest to be left out of pocket by a man who has a history of criminal and dishonest offending dating back 30 years. The Taylor family paid Helensville builder Grant Norman King $23,500 to build a sleepout for their sick grandfather at the back of their Glen Eden home - only for the project to be quashed by council inspectors in November because it did not have a permit. The family have yet to have any of their money, paid as a 75 per cent deposit to King, returned. A Herald on Sunday investigation shows King is bankrupt and does not have consent from the Ministry of Economic Development to be self-employed. The ministry is checking to see if King has breached his bankruptcy conditions. King has been declared bankrupt three times, in 1991, 2005 and 2010, when he owed around $90,000 to six creditors.

The number of women serving time in New Zealand prisons has jumped by almost one-third in three years and prison staff say the inmates are younger and more violent. A leading researcher partly blames the media, as young girls grow up trying to mimic the violent "kick-ass" women celebrated in video games and on television. Figures released to the Sunday Star-Times show that from 2009 to 2011 the number of female prisoners increased by 27%, from 437 to 555. Of the 19 prisons in New Zealand, three in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch are specifically for women.

With his prospective opponent behind bars, Sonny Bill Williams has moved quickly to replace him and is expected to slug it out on February 8 for the vacant New Zealand heavyweight title with Clarence Tillman. The All Blacks star was scheduled to fight 33-year-old Richard Tutaki but revelations yesterday the Kiwi heavyweight had been arrested for failing to appear in the Auckland District Court last week to face more than 10 charges – including possession of methamphetamine – scuppered those plans. According to Williams' manager, Khoder Nasser, his client had been initially devastated upon learning the news but by last night was already in the process of determining his next opponent. Sunday Star-Times has been told by one well-connected source it is likely to be giant American-born heavyweight Tillman, who boasts 11 wins, eight losses and two draws to his name. "I've never seen Sonny this gutted in his sporting career," Nasser, who was courtside at the Heineken Open with Williams yesterday, told Star-Times.

Navman

The Paeroa grandfather was making a pre-Christmas "pressie run" around Auckland when his satellite navigation system, a Navman MY80T, told him to make a u-turn on State Highway 18's Upper Harbour Highway, which opened in August last year. Pope couldn't believe the instructions he received while travelling from West Auckland towards the North Shore and wants others to be aware of the potential for disaster. "Fortunately, knowing the area, I ignored the directions," he said. "I wonder if some people are being misdirected by their [navigation] systems. If I went to Wellington and I was going down some street and it told me to do a u-turn, then I'm going to do that." He has owned the GPS for three or four months and has not tried to update it. The Herald on Sunday asked GeoSmart general manager Phil Allen to test an identical unit and a TomTom 2050 Live, from Navman's main commercial rival, on the Upper Harbour Highway. GeoSmart, owned by the Automobile Association, creates the map database used by Navman, TomTom and the half dozen much smaller satellite navigation brands. During the test, the Navman gave the same u-turn message on the new stretch of motorway, which is showed as a blank no-man's land, as the unit Pope bought last year. The TomTom had the correct map and did not give the u-turn instruction. Both units were also tested on the Victoria Park flyover, but neither had been updated to include the new lane configuration.

White House officials raised concerns on Saturday about online piracy legislation in the works in Congress that top technology companies have decried as heavy-handed, saying a lighter touch would be better. In a statement, three advisers to President Barack Obama said they believed the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and other bills could make businesses on the Internet vulnerable to litigation and harm legal activity and free speech. "Any effort to combat online piracy must guard against the risk of online censorship of lawful activity and must not inhibit innovation by our dynamic businesses large and small," said the officials, including White House cyber-security czar Howard Schmidt. The House of Representatives' SOPA bill aims to crack down on foreign websites selling pirated US movies, music or other counterfeit goods by allowing private parties to target the websites' advertisers and payment providers.

People and businesses who find ".co.nz" insufficiently patriotic may be able to register websites that end with ".kiwi" from next year. A group of ex-pat New Zealanders based in Vancouver has teamed up with Wellington lawyer Peter Dengate Thrush – a former chairman of worldwide internet governance body Icann – to found a new company, Dot Kiwi, which hopes to cater for those who want a more "Kiwi flavour" to their online identity. However, what address will be the most "New Zealandish" may be open to debate. Dot Kiwi, which is Canadian-owned, would compete with New Zealand's non-profit internet society, InternetNZ, which oversees ".nz" addresses and is funded by a compulsory levy on registrations.

Sir Graham Henry and wife Raewyn have sold their waterfront Auckland mansion in a private sale. The Cliff Rd home, perched above St Heliers Beach, is understood to have sold for $4.33 million with the private sale saving the Henrys an estimated $66,000 in real estate fees. The former All Black coach confirmed he and his wife had sold their house and said they were happy with the sale but did not want to comment further. "We would prefer not to comment, it's a private matter and that is how we would like it to stay," Sir Graham said. Raewyn Henry joked they would be "homeless" but said they hadn't yet moved from their home.

Last week psychologists at Berlin's Humboldt University released research into what names attract the most response on dating sites. They found people called Mandy, Justin or Chantal attracted less response because, for some reason, their names were associated with trouble-making. But those called Jacob, Alexander, Charlotte, Emma, Hannah or Max were much more likely to have good luck, the researchers found. So what names are hottest here? New Zealand dating website Find Someone carried out its own research. Overall it found guys called Rod and girls called Becky were the members who drew the most attention. Sam and Pam were the least pursued. But there are regional variations. Julia and Brad got the most consideration in Auckland, while Cheryl and Thomas had the least. Meanwhile, down in windy Wellington it was Katherine and Simon who were "hot" while Susan and Robert were not so lucky in love.
