A driving instructor has revealed the 'alarming' lack of knowledge some older drivers have of modern motoring rules. Peter Sheppard says some senior motorists do not understand traffic lights or road markings, and never check their blind spots. He told TV ONE's Breakfast he has been shocked by what he has found as he tours the country promoting a new driver instruction programme. "It's quite alarming to find out these people are in situations where they don't use the parking brake, they don't understand traffic lights they don't do head checks - turning the head around to check the blind spot," he told TV ONE's Breakfast. When drivers turn 75 they are required to pass a medical, and renew their licence every few years.

Marmite lovers are cashing in on news that 'Marmageddon' is about to hit, with one person asking for $800 for a 250g jar of their precious stash on TradeMe. Supermarket shelves around the country are reportedly being stripped bare of the popular breakfast spread, after warnings it was in short supply. Social network websites went into a frenzy yesterday when the news broke that consumers needed to ration, and now more than 50 jars are up for sale on TradeMe. So far, the highest bid to reach reserve is a 1.2kg jar which is currently selling for $60. An ambitious seller was asking for $799 for a 250g jar, but no one had bid on this auction. Even semi-used jars were for sale on the auction site, with one Te Kuiti seller asking $100 for a third-full jar.

New Zealand's longer-term fixed mortgage rates are tipped to start rising as local banks find their wholesale funding costs going up amid an improving US economic outlook. In the last month global investors have begun selling down their holdings in safe haven assets such as US Treasuries, on the back of improving US economic data including better- than-expected employment and retail sales figures. On top of that, the interest rates at which banks could borrow money tended to be influenced by long- term global interest rates. "So to the extent that the US is leading the march higher you tend to expect wholesale rates to follow suit, and then eventually for those increased costs to be passed onto fixed mortgage borrowers," he said.

A Waikato hunter was rescued from Te Urewera National Park after he was bitten by a spider. The 28-year-old hunter had been bitten by a spider the previous day and overnight one of his legs had swollen up. Police were alerted about the injured hunter at the Ngahiramai Hut at about 12.30pm yesterday. At about 1.30 pm they left Rotorua for the two hour drive to Ruatahuna, and then trekked for 11 kilometres to the hut, which is down the Whakatane River. Late in the afternoon, a helicopter based at Murupara was able to fly in and rescue the man. This proved successful, and he was delivered to an ambulance at Murupara.

Three of Air New Zealand's grounded ATR fleet are expected to be back in service today following safety fears. Passengers faced a second day of travel disruption yesterday, after 11 aircraft were grounded when hairline cracks were found in the area around the windows of the cockpit in one aircraft during routine overnight maintenance in Christchurch. The ATR-500 aircraft have been in service with Mount Cook Airline since 1999 and have an average age of 10.9 years. The 68-seat aircraft operate to 10 destinations around New Zealand, including Dunedin and Invercargill. Meanwhile, passengers are being warned there could be weather delays to flights today. An Air New Zealand spokeswoman says there were diversions for a number of regional aircraft late yesterday, and as a result there may be a disruption to the flight scheduling. Passengers are encouraged to check the Air New Zealand website.

A 39-year-old company director says he is shocked and insulted after being turned away from a bar for being "too old". But the bar and other youth-oriented establishments say they do not discriminate by age. Justin Allan, managing director of Transbay Coaches in Whakatane, said he, his girlfriend and four male friends, aged between 29 and 39, planned to go to Tauranga's Temple Bar last Saturday after a barbecue. But upon arrival Mr Allan, who moved to Tauranga from Whakatane six months ago, said he and three of his friends were told by the bouncer that they could not go in because it was a student bar and they were too old. However, his girlfriend and one of their male friends, who reached the door first, were told that they could enter. "As you can imagine, we were both shocked and embarrassed at his response considering the ages within our group," Mr Allan said. "I didn't want to cause a scene. It was embarrassing enough being turned away for that reason." Respectably dressed and not overly intoxicated, he said he struggled to find any reason why they would not be allowed in.

A Hamilton City Council review has resulted in 13 redundancies and staff are bracing themselves for further cuts as the axe hovers with over three-quarters of the organisation yet to be looked at. Six of the city council's 25 units have been reviewed, a further five reviews are either planned or in progress and the remaining 14 will be completed before the end of the year. A manager in the community unit was made redundant this month and last year 12 jobs, including three management roles were axed. The former Hamilton City Council energy manager is one of 13 staff members who have been made redundant in the first six of 25 organisational reviews.

Police said a 20-year-old woman was dragged off a footpath and into bushes on the corner of Collinwood and Anglesea Streets at about 11.30pm on Saturday. She was indecently assaulted as she struggled and called for help. The attacker fled when another young woman heard the victim's screams and rushed to the rescue, police said. "This woman has seen something and then done something about it, thereby preventing an already traumatic incident becoming that much worse for our victim and we would to commend her for that." The good samaritan had stayed to comfort the victim, Ms Moore said. However, she did not accompany her to a police station to report the attack. Ms Moore appealed for the woman to come forward to help the police investigation into the incident.

A $1.6 billion wind farm - the country's largest - has been given the go-ahead to be built in Wairarapa. Genesis Energy's Castle Hill Wind Farm will dot hillsides throughout northern Wairarapa with up to 286 turbines and provide power for up to 370,000 homes. ''Having carefully considered all the evidence to date, we have concluded that consent can be granted for most and probably all turbine groups for reasons we will provide in due course,'' said resource hearing chairman Philip Milne. The project will provide 185 jobs during construction, 40 ongoing jobs, and bring $247 million into the Masterton and Tararua districts.

Prime Minister John Key is among thousands of Kiwis having to ration their Marmite, as 'Marmageddon' enters its second day. Mr Key said he too will have to spread thin to ensure his supply lasts. "I only have got a very small amount in my office and once that runs out I'm aware supplies are very short." However Mr Key told Firstline this morning that he also likes the Australian-made rival Vegemite. "I've got to be honest, I can eat both."

Numbers of Kiwis travelling around New Zealand surged in 2011, according to a new Government survey. The survey, conducted by the Ministry of Economic Development, showed the number of domestic trips increased by 13% and spending was up 14%. Peter Ellis, the tourism research and evaluation manager at the Ministry, said the figures show a big surge. "Spending rose 14% to $9.8 billion. The number of trips taken by domestic travellers also increased, up 13% to 50 million." Business travellers made a total of 14.1 million trips, a 31% increase from the previous year, while those traveling to visit friends and family made a total of 16.6 million trips, up 12% on the previous year. Average expenditure per trip changed little, but transport and food spending increased significantly. Kiwis spent $3.4 billion on transport, up 17% from the year before. Food spending was up 13% at $2.6 billion. The survey is conducted annually by phone of 15,000 New Zealand residents and is undertaken throughout the year.

The New Zealand dollar rose to a three week on signs the local economy is picking up pace and after a Federal Reserve official suggested the US recovery is becoming "more established". The New Zealand dollar rose as high as 82.87 cents overnight from 82.59 cents yesterday at 5pm. It traded at 82.63 US cents at 8.30 am. New Zealand data continues to show the local economy is on track with the Westpac McDermott Miller Consumer Confidence Index rising 1.1 points to 102.4 in the first three months of the year. The Bank of New Zealand Business NZ Performance of Services Index recorded its highest February reading since the survey began in 2007, rising 1.7 points to 55.5 points.

State-owned power company Meridian Energy has reported a drop in half-year profit and issued a warning on low hydro lakes. Meridian's half-yearly financial report stated its underlying net profit to the end of December 2011 was just under $99 million, down by over $24 million from the previous period. Chairman Chris Moller called it "a sound result in challenging trading conditions". A $28 million settlement with the Rio Tinto Aluminum smelter and the sale of the company's Tekapo hydro stations dented Meridian's revenue. The company said both inflows and storage levels in hydro lakes are well below average levels and it expects a subdued start to the second half of the financial year.

The Warehouse will steal Apple's thunder and launch the new iPad in New Zealand tomorrow. The retailer has 100 16 gigabyte, wi-fi only iPads to sell from 11am tomorrow on its website, for $799. Spokeswoman Jenni Ryan said it had parallel imported the iPads from the United States. The Warehouse is not an official iPad distributor, but stocks other Apple products such as iPods.

Outdoor apparel retailer Kathmandu, which is being hard-hit by a tough retail environment on both sides of the Tasman, is expected to post a drop in profit in its interim result tomorrow. Goldman Sachs analyst Buffy Gill has forecast the firm's half-year net profit to fall 21 per cent on the prior comparable period to $8.3 million, while earnings before interest and tax are expected to drop 17 per cent to $19.3 million. Some of the things to look out for in tomorrow's result were weak like-for-like sales, excess inventory, lower gross margins and weaker cash flow, Gill said.

United Parcel Service will pay $US6.85 billion for Dutch peer TNT Express in a deal that will boost the position of the world's largest package delivery company outside the United States. UPS will become the market leader in Europe and also gain access to TNT's stronger networks in the fast-growing Asian and Latin American markets, increasing the US company's global sales to more than $US60 billion (45 billion euros) and leaving it with 477,000 employees. "TNT Express fits into UPS's long-term network plan," UPS Chief Executive Scott Davis told investors. "This broadens UPS's global footprint." The deal will boost UPS's revenue outside the United States to 36% of total projected annual revenue of $US60 billion, up from 26% today. In particular, it will increase UPS's presence in Brazil and Australia, executives said. The acquisition is the largest by far in UPS's 104-year history.

Starbucks will open the first store in its new Evolution Fresh juice bar chain today, its biggest move outside coffee and one it hopes will boost the company's position in the $US50 billion health food sector. The juice bar business is, however, fragmented and intensely competitive and some analysts say the Evolution Fresh shops could have lower margins than Starbucks' coffee shops. With Starbucks yet to detail how many juice bars it plans to open, the popularity of its first shop, located in Bellevue, Washington, an upscale city just east of Seattle, will be closely watched. It will sell fresh and bottled fruit and vegetable juices, smoothies and food, such as wraps, salads and soups.

An Otaki man is far more aware of scammers after an experience selling his car online turned sour. Fraud Awareness Week kicked off yesterday. It is estimated that Kiwis lose $448 million to scams each year. Contractor Stephen Pitcher, 28, listed his Subaru stationwagon on Trade Me for $2500 about a month ago. Soon after, he was contacted by a potential buyer overseas who said he would pay more than the car was worth - offering $3000. Pitcher said the buyer told him the only way he could pay would be through Paypal. "He was a navy officer and he was out at sea at the time so he couldn't pay for the shipping fee, so he asked me to pay for it for him." "Trade Me told me not to deal with him no more so I've sold the car to someone else. It all just turned sour." After advice from Trade Me and the Consumer Affairs Ministry, Pitcher decided to sell the car to someone else but regrets losing almost $1000 to the scammer.

A Bay of Plenty man who grew dozens of cannabis plants near a police station was busted only when an officer hunting an escaped prisoner went on to his property. Jonathan Richard Mendoza, 47, was caught red-handed with 54 individually potted cannabis plants in his garage near Greerton police station. The officer had gone on to Mendoza's property looking for an offender who had escaped from the station on December 14. Defence lawyer Andrew Blair said his client maintained the cannabis was for personal use. The judge sentenced Mendoza to six months' community detention and nine months' supervision.
